Speech Therapy for Kids
At Little Talks Speech Therapy, we offer a wide range of speech therapy services to meet the unique needs of each child we work with. Our services treat:
- Articulation disorders: Children who struggle with articulation may have trouble correctly pronouncing specific sounds or words.
- Phonological disorders: These disorders occur when a child struggles to understand how to use sounds to create words.
- Motor speech disorders: Also known as apraxia, motor speech disorders impact the production of speech sounds, resulting in decreased clarity and comprehensibility of their speech.
Signs of Speech Sound Disorders
According to ASHA, signs and symptoms of functional speech sound disorders include the following:
- Omissions/deletions: The child omits or deletes certain sounds (e.g., “cu” for “cup” and “poon” for “spoon”)
- Substitutions: The child substitutes one or more sounds, which may result in loss of phonemic contrast (e.g., “thing” for “sing” and “wabbit” for “rabbit”)
- Additions: The child adds or inserts one or more extra sounds into a word (e.g., “buhlack” for “black”)
- Distortions: The child alters or changes sounds (e.g., a lateral “s”)
- Syllable-level errors: The child deletes weak syllables (e.g., “tephone” for “telephone”)
Speech Sound Developmental Milestones
Generally, children should be able to say the following sounds by certain ages:
- 2 years old: /p,h, n, d, b, w, m/
- 3 years old: /t, f, y, ng, k, g/
- 4 years old: /v, l, ch, s, z, dz, sh/
- 5 years old: /zh, r, th (the)/
- 6 years old: /th (thumb)/
It’s important to note that these are general guidelines, and there can be a wide range of individual variation in speech sound acquisition. If you have concerns about your child’s speech sound development, please contact us for an evaluation.
